WELCOME New Island Transit ATU 1576 Members

We welcome in solidarity, our newly certified members of Island Transit as part of ATU Local 1576. We are excited about what the future holds for them and we’re certain that future will be one with excellent Union representation and stability for improved working conditions and protections! Contract Negotiations Begin with First Transit, Lakewood Group We will begin contract negotiations for the group of Supervisors, Dispatchers and Payroll Clerk who were certified into our Local in 2012. After a long battle in front of the National Labor Relations Board in 2012, when First Transit appealed the Union’s petition to organize Lakewood’s Supervisors, Dispatchers and Payroll Clerk, the Union prevailed and successfully organized this group of employees into our bargaining unit. We worked hard creating a new labor agreement which is due to expire at the end of this month. We remain optimistic these negotiations will go well. Arbitration Update Grievance Arbitration was held for Community Transit Coach Operator Nick Cooke on February 25th. The Union filed a grievance after the agency issued multiple steps of discipline at once, dismissing the principles of progressive discipline. Briefs will be issued to the arbitrator this time next month and the arbitrator’s decision should be issued sometime in Late May. Grievance Arbitration will be held for Community Transit Coach Operator Diana Jones on May 5-6, 2015. A grievance was filed after the agency terminated Ms. Jones after she was denied a medical leave of absence in accordance with the clear contract language of the labor agreement. We will keep you informed on this progress. Best wishes to all our members for a Happy Spring! Regards to All, Be Safe, Kathleen M. Custer, President ATU Local 1576
