ATU Local 1576 Call to Action after Violent Assault on Driver
ATU Local 1576 calls for Action after Another Violent Assault on a Bus Operator.
ATU Local 1576 is deeply disheartened by the recent assault on one of our union brothers while he was operating a coach on the 222 Route. On February 26, two individuals boarded the bus at Alder and Grove in Marysville, held the operator at knifepoint, struck him with an umbrella, and demanded money. The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office is investigating, but the suspects are still at large.
Thankfully, our brother was not more seriously injured - but we know all too well, especially after the tragic loss of our Brother Shawn Yim at Metro, how truly fortunate that is. On the night of the attack, Community Transit contacted the union, and our representative met the operator at base to ensure he wasn't alone and to help him navigate the difficult road ahead.
This is part of a disturbing rise in assaults on transit workers across our region. We've heard from many members who are deeply concerned about their safety on the job, and we share their frustration. These attacks are more than just workplace issues - they are part of a larger social crisis. While the agency has taken steps toward improving safety, including a bid for protective barrier doors and the presence of transit security officer and transit police, it's still not enough. ATU Local 1576 is committed to pushing for stronger legislation and enforcement to protect our workforce. No transit worker should have to fear for their life while serving the public.
We have scheduled a debrief with Community Transit to demand better and more immediate communication regarding assaults. When incidents like this happen, timely and transparent communication is critical to ensuring our members are informed and protected.
ATU Local 1576 will not stop fighting until real, effective solutions are in place to keep our members safe.
In Solidarity,
Dani Julien, President ATU Local 1576
