The proposal submission period for the coach operator barrier door project at Community Transit has officially closed, and six companies submitted proposals for consideration. This response is huge and marks a critical step in enhancing operator safety at the agency.

Over the next two weeks, the RFP evaluation team will review the proposals and select a provider to equip all 312 coaches with these protective barriers. The union has been adamant that the barriers extend as far forward toward the windshield as possible and be as tall as feasible, ensuring maximum protection for operators.

Our transit operators are facing a dramatic increase in assaults, and their safety is non-negotiable. We fought for these barriers to be designed with operator protection as the top priority, and we’re committed to advocating for the best possible solution to be chosen.

The installation process is expected to begin in June, with completion of the entire fleet projected by the end of 2026. Further updates will be provided as the selection and implementation process moves forward.
